School Days

Since the “first day” pictures, I haven’t really posted about Max’s experiences in Kindergarten thus far. Everything seems to be going fabulously for Max – between Bubbles the Bunny, a real basketball hoop in the recess yard and a hot lunch every day, Max is in heaven! Not to fear, the learning aspect of things is coming along nicely, too. The highlight of the academic side of things has been having his own pencil case and workbooks. He truly enjoys learning new things and even gets disappointed when there is no homework.

In addition to his studious ways, he also brings a bit of comic relief to his class. His teacher recently told me that he makes her laugh all day long. Max has taken to winking at his teacher every time he gets an answer correct. I have yet to approach this topic with Max to figure out what is going on his little head!

Once the Goose is tucked in for the evening, most nights Max can be found in his room doing his “papers” as he calls it. We have some workbooks that he enjoys completing and he always practices his handwriting. He has been able to write all his letters for a few years, but now we are concentrating on the proper size and perfecting when to use upper case vs. lower case letters. In just the few short weeks since school has started, we can see a huge difference in his fine motor skills. This has now become my favorite time of the day – the house is quiet and the three of us are gathered around in his room just talking about the day.

The night usually ends with Max reading a book to us. Max picked up on sight words very easily early on; however, the concept of sounding out words took him a bit longer to master. We have really seen great improvements in this area. He now makes it through most books completely on his own and he is eager to try to sound out words. Once Mommy and Daddy’s story time is over, it is time for Max’s story time. Max is currently reading the Magic Tree House series – we are on Book #37. Jack and Annie have taken us on some wonderful adventures!
